We all like to take a break now and then and get away for some rest and relaxation. For many of us that means taking a road trip or two. Whether you’re visiting the Grand Canyon or taking a cross-country trek, road trips offer a level of freedom that’s unlike any other way to travel. However, before you hit the open road, there are several important steps you should take to ensure your trip is as safe and carefree as possible.
Get a Pre-Trip Inspection
If it’s been some time since your car was last serviced, or you’re planning a long-distance trip, a pre-trip inspection can make all the difference when it comes to peace of mind on the road. It’s important to make sure that your vehicle is up to the task—and a pre-trip inspection will do just that. Some things we’ll check include:
- Tire pressure and the condition of your tires
- Fluid levels
- Belts and hoses
- The radiator and cooling system
- Brakes
- Shocks and struts
- Battery
- Air, fuel, and cabin air filters
- Fuel and air intake
- Windshield wiper condition
- Air conditioning
We’ll keep an eye out for any developing issues that could put you at risk of a breakdown.

Other Vehicles at Home
If you’re planning a road trip that will last over a month, it’s also important to think about the cars you’re leaving behind. You may want to consider using a battery tender, a device that transfers power from an AC outlet to the car’s battery so that it stays fully charged. It’s also not a bad idea to fill the fluids and tires to the appropriate levels and remove anything from inside your car and garage that might attract rodents or other pests. Discuss how long you plan to be gone with your service advisor, and we can offer additional tips to keep your vehicle in excellent shape while you’re away. When you return home, gently drive your vehicle around for several miles to get all the fluids circulating.
Be Prepared with the Right Supplies
Even with the most thorough planning, the unexpected can still happen. Make sure you’re prepared by having the proper supplies on hand. Some of the most important things you can pack include:
- A first aid kit
- A fire extinguisher
- Cell phone charger
- Jumper cables
- Non-perishable snacks
- Drinking water
- A roadside emergency kit with flares and a flashlight
- A lug wrench and jack (if your car has a spare tire)
All emergency supplies should be easy to access (not buried under luggage), in case you need to get them out quickly. It’s also not a bad idea to make sure all of your important documents, like insurance and registration, are up to date and stored in a safe location.
Know the Rules of the Road
If you’re traveling through other states, brush up on some of the most important local driving laws—there may be differences you’re not aware of. For example, in many Northeastern states, the interstate speed limit is 65 mph; in Texas, some speed limits may be as high as 85 mph. In New York state, drivers are allowed to make right turns at a red light; in New York City, drivers are only allowed to make a right turn at a red light if there’s a sign posted that says it’s allowed. Knowing the differences in laws will keep you safer on the road—and can help you avoid a ticket!
Additional Road Trip Tips
- Keep your owner’s manual handy in case there’s something you need to lookup
- Try not to put luggage on the top of your car, as it can lower your gas mileage. If you can’t avoid it, you can make it more aerodynamic by tightly tying a strong sheet or tarp around it
- Fill your gas tank once it’s half-full—sometimes the next gas station can be further away than you’d think!
- Driving a long distance with a dirty car isn’t fun, and in some cases, it can even affect your visibility; consider getting a car or RV wash and detailing
